Discipleship Training School – April 1 – August 23, 2026
If you want an experience that stretches you, inspires you, and helps you discover who God made you to be during a season that strengthens your faith, gives you space to breathe, and fills you with purpose; that’s what you’ll find here at Youth With a Mission Denali.
The Discipleship Training School (DTS) at YWAM Denali is the foundational training experience for anyone stepping into Youth With A Mission, designed to help individuals know God more deeply and prepare them to make Him known in the nations. Set just outside Denali National Park, DTS at YWAM Denali takes place in an environment that naturally invites reflection, resilience, and dependence on God. DTS is not merely a classroom-based program; it is an immersive journey of transformation that engages the heart, mind, and spirit. Over the course of the school, students are challenged to examine their beliefs, confront personal barriers, and develop a lifestyle of obedience to Jesus. Through teaching, worship, prayer, and community life, DTS provides a space where God speaks clearly and students learn to respond with faith. The wilderness setting reinforces the core purpose of DTS—to strip away distractions and create room for a deeper encounter with God.
At the heart of DTS is the desire to help students grow in their personal relationship with God. Core subjects taught during the lecture phase include the character and nature of God, hearing God’s voice, intimacy with God, and developing a consistent life of worship and prayer. Students are trained to read, understand, and apply Scripture, learning how the Bible shapes beliefs, decisions, and mission. Teaching on repentance, forgiveness, and grace invites students into emotional and spiritual healing, allowing God to address past wounds and establish healthy identity in Christ. DTS at YWAM Denali emphasizes that knowing God is not about information alone but about relationship, obedience, and transformation. As students grow in intimacy with God, they are encouraged to cultivate daily spiritual disciplines that will sustain them long after the DTS is complete.
Another key focus of DTS is identity and character formation. Students explore biblical identity, learning what it means to live as sons and daughters of God rather than being driven by performance, fear, or comparison. Topics such as the Father heart of God, freedom from sin and strongholds, and living a surrendered life are central to the DTS experience. Teaching on humility, servant leadership, and integrity challenges students to allow God to shape their character in practical ways. Living in close community provides daily opportunities to practice forgiveness, communication, accountability, and love. At YWAM Denali, the rugged environment and shared responsibilities help refine perseverance and teach students to rely on God and one another. DTS is intentionally designed to shape not just what students believe, but who they become.
DTS at YWAM Denali also places a strong emphasis on missions and God’s heart for the nations. Students are taught about the Great Commission, the history and values of YWAM, and God’s redemptive plan throughout Scripture. Special attention is given to unreached peoples and the 10/40 Window, where access to the gospel remains limited and spiritual darkness is often strong. Teaching addresses cross-cultural communication, spiritual warfare, and living incarnationally among different cultures. Students are encouraged to wrestle with difficult questions about suffering, obedience, and the cost of following Jesus. Through these teachings, DTS prepares students not only to go on outreach but to carry a long-term vision for the nations. The goal is to cultivate hearts that are willing to go anywhere God sends them, including the world’s hardest and darkest places.
Practical ministry and obedience are woven throughout the DTS experience. Students participate in work duties, service projects, evangelism, and outreach opportunities that reinforce what they are learning in the classroom. Teaching on teamwork, stewardship, and responsibility helps students understand that mission happens in everyday faithfulness, not only in dramatic moments. Living in Alaska’s challenging environment teaches adaptability, perseverance, and trust in God’s provision. DTS at YWAM Denali emphasizes that obedience often looks like serving joyfully, honoring leadership, and loving people well in ordinary situations. These practical elements help students integrate faith with action, preparing them for future ministry contexts where flexibility and resilience are essential.
The DTS experience at YWAM Denali ultimately leads into an outreach phase, where students step into cross-cultural missions and apply what they have learned in real-world settings. Outreach locations often align with YWAM Denali’s focus on unreached regions and challenging environments, pushing students beyond comfort and into deeper dependence on God. This season solidifies lessons learned during lecture phase, strengthening faith through lived experience. DTS is not an end in itself, but a launching point into a life of obedience, mission, and service. Whether students continue long-term in YWAM, pursue missions elsewhere, or return to their home communities, DTS equips them with a strong spiritual foundation. At YWAM Denali, DTS exists to raise up disciples who know God deeply, live boldly for Jesus, and are prepared to bring His light into the darkest places of the world.
